New rules for the introduction of personal consignments of animal products into the EU
New rules for the introduction of personal consignments of animal products into the EU

The European Commission recently adopted a new Regulation on the introduction of animal products by travelers into the EU. It will enter into force on 1 May 2009 and replace the current rules.

This new legislation intends to clearly explain to the general public the rules concerning the introduction of animal products into the European Union. The risk of introducing diseases to EU livestock, such as foot and mouth disease or other diseases that may also affect humans, is not only evident when animal products are brought into the EU by travelers, but also when such products are send to the EU by mail. The general public therefore plays an important role in keeping diseases out of the EU. EC press release: Link
