PETS or pests? British veterinarians discuss Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

Speakers from British Universities and Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens discussed on 3 April 2009 in Birmingham with the interested audience possible consequences for the UK after the derogations from the Pet Travel Scheme - which are currently in place for the UK, Ireland, Sweden and Malta - will phase out in 2010.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) had jointly organised this symposium with the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA). Main points for discussion were vector borne diseases, rabies, the global zoonotic potential of Echinococcus multilocularis and Defra's (UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affaires) policy on the end of the Pet Travel Scheme derogation.
