European Court reprimands Greece for shortage of veterinary staff

In a recent court case the European Court of Justice has declared that by not having adopted all the measures necessary to remedy the shortage of staff assigned to the services responsible for veterinary controls in Greece, the country failed to fulfill its obligations under Article 4(2)(c) of Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on official controls performed to ensure the verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules.

No real sanctions have been proposed, but a second procedure could be started in case that the Commission, who will now need to monitor very closely if Greece complies with EU feed and food law and veterinary requirements, finds further infringements. Official Journal: Link
