Influenza A/H1N1 virus 2009 detected in turkeys

Chilean authorities informed OIE and the European Commission last week about an outbreak of the pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus 2009 in breeding turkeys in two holdings, owned by the same company in the Valparaiso region.

The virus had been detected during the routine surveillance for avian influenza viruses, following behavior changes and lower egg production. The source of the outbreaks is currently unknown. Control measures which were applied immediately consist of quarantine, screening, disinfection of infected premises and movement restrictions. Further testing is being conducted at commercial holdings within a 3km radius. This is the first time an infection of turkeys has been shown with the pandemic A/H1N1 2009 virus. Therefore awareness for this virus should not only be high in pig farmers but also in poultry farmers. Biosecurity measures should be evaluated and increased or adjusted if necessary.
