Animal Welfare Labelling – Commission launches report

Following the feasibility study on ‘Animal Welfare Labelling’ (Part 1) and ‘Community Reference Centre’ (Part 2), a report outlining a series of options for animal welfare labeling was adopted on 28 October and published by the European Commission.

The report is addressed to the European Parliament, to the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions and aims at making it ‘easier for consumers to identify and choose welfare-friendly products, and thereby give an economic incentive to producers to improve the welfare of animals’. Outlining a series of options for animal welfare labeling, the report tries to facilitate in-depth political debate and discusses the possible establishment of a ‘European Network of Reference Centres for the protection and welfare of animals’.
