No piglet castration without anesthetics

Belgium is one of the country in which a nationwide approach is taken to revise castration procedures

Over the last years Netherlands and Switzerland moved to production in which anesthetics is mandatory as well. In both countries, the whole food chain was involved in making these plans. FVE updated its 2001 position paper on pig castration last November, concluding that “surgical castration without anaesthesia and analgesia should be avoided. Surgical castration, when necessary, should be performed by veterinarians under general or local anaesthesia with additional prolonged analgesia.” This also implies that adequate anaesthetics and analgesics “should be authorised for piglets in all countries”.
