Clearer and more cosistent food labeling rules and call for strong European aquaculture sector





The European Parliament (16 June) voted to make nutrition labelling of pre-packed foods mandatory; MEPs voted in favor of new country of origin requirements and they supported extending compulsory labeling (already in place for beef, honey, olive oil and fresh fruit and vegetables) also to all meat such as poultry, dairy products and other single-ingredient products.

MEPs called for a stronger aquaculture sector in Europe which could help meet the growing consumer demand; a resolution adopted by the European Parliament last thursday says that safeguards are needed to prevent environmental and public health risks. MEPs argued that clearer rules, less red tape and research investment are needed for the sector to take off
