Draft opinions on animal cloning from the European Food Safety Authority and the European Group on Ethics

EFSA has launched a public consultation on its draft scientific opinion on the implications of animal cloning on food safety, animal health and welfare and the environment. The work follows a request from the European Commission (EC) to EFSA for advice on this issue in February 2007.

EFSA’s opinion will help inform consideration of any future EU measures in relation to animal clones and products obtained from these animals. Comments can be submitted until 25 February 2008. For more information visit EFSA's website. On 16 January the European Group on Ethics (EGE) adopted its opinion on ethical aspects of animal cloning for food supply. The EGE has doubts to whether cloning animals for food supply is ethically justified, whether this applies also to progeny is open to further scientific research. For more information, see EGE full press release and opinion.
