Commissioner Dalli at the ENVI Committee

On Tuesday 12 of April DG SANCO Commissioner Mr Dalli participated at the meeting of the European Parliamentís Environment Committee in Bruxelles to exchange views with its members.

He outlined that priorities for 2011 and 2012 were the new animal welfare strategy (end of 2011) and the new animal health law by 2012. He also answered to questions mainly concerning novel food and cloning, laying hens ban and animal transport Regulation.
Infact, a new proposal on novel foods will be drafted soon and will exclude the cloning of animals for food production (legislative proposal by March 2013). With regard laying hens Commissioner Dalli said that there is a possibility that up to 8 million eggs a day will be produced in the EU none complying with the ban thus placing countries in a distorted competition among themselves.
EC will consider other options to avoid such unfair situation. He informed the audience that Commission will draft a report on the animal transport regulation.
