The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) proudly recognizes outstanding contributions to veterinary science, animal welfare, and One Health through its 2024 awards. This year’s recipients have demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovation, and dedication to the profession on a global scale.
FVE Animal Welfare Award
- Dr. Andrea Gavinelli
Dr. Andrea Gavinelli has been honoured with the 2024 FVE Animal Welfare Award for his pivotal role in shaping EU animal welfare policies since 1999. His leadership has empowered veterinarians across Europe through impactful legislation and training workshops. On the global stage, Dr. Gavinelli’s collaborations with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have set high standards for animal welfare, inspiring the veterinary profession worldwide.
FVE Award
- Prof. Simon Doherty (In Memoriam)
Professor Simon Doherty received the FVE Award in November 2024 in recognition of his exceptional contributions to One Health and sustainability. A distinguished leader in farm animal health, aquaculture, and global development, Prof. Doherty served as BVA President and Chair of the UK One Health Coordination Group. His transformative work with Ripple Effect advanced sustainable farming practices and climate resilience in sub-Saharan Africa, leaving a profound impact on communities and the profession alike. Tragically, Prof. Doherty passed away shortly after receiving the award, but his legacy of dedication to animal health, welfare, and education will continue to inspire veterinarians worldwide.
FVE Distinguished Service Award
- Zsolt Pinter
Zsolt Pinter is the recipient of the 2024 FVE Distinguished Service Award for his far-reaching contributions to veterinary research, practice, education, and advocacy. As a leader in the Hungarian Veterinary Chamber and active contributor to the FVE and the Union of European Veterinary Practitioners (UEVP), he has significantly strengthened veterinary governance in Europe. Zsolt’s vision and commitment to fostering collaboration, exemplified by founding the Visegrad Vet+ group, have advanced knowledge-sharing and cross-border cooperation among Eastern European nations. His exemplary service upholds the highest standards of the veterinary profession.
