The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)—collectively representing over 400,000 veterinarians worldwide — today released two landmark joint statements reaffirming their shared commitment to responsible antimicrobial use and the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The first statement on Continuous Monitoring of Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance (LINK) outlines comprehensive recommendations for policymakers, regulators, and the animal health industry to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship worldwide. Key recommendations include:
- Maintaining veterinary oversight of medically important antimicrobials.
- Ensuring science-based, sector-specific regulation of antimicrobial use.
- Balancing animal health and welfare alongside human health in AMR risk analyses.
The second statement on strengthening veterinary antimicrobial stewardship (LINK) emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring of antimicrobial use and resistance across all sectors and regions. It calls for:
- Robust global surveillance systems.
- Harmonized standards for data collection and analysis.
- Coordinated One Health approaches integrating human, animal, and environmental health perspectives.
While most of the global human AMR burden is linked to healthcare-acquired infections, addressing antimicrobial resistance requires coordinated action across all sectors. The veterinary profession continues to contribute within the animal health sector through preventive healthcare, biosecurity measures, and judicious prescribing practices.
“Effective AMR management demands a true One Health approach where each sector takes responsibility for its own practices while working collaboratively,” Siegfried Moder, FVE President, states.
The joint statements highlight the global need for accessible diagnostics, sustainable funding for AMR research and surveillance across all sectors, and continued access to effective antimicrobials to protect animal health and welfare—while minimizing the risk of resistance development.
