The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) has published a new statement on evidence-led veterinary prescription and the responsible use of antimicrobials under Regulation (EU) 2019/6.
As the EU works to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach, FVE reaffirms its commitment to prudent antimicrobial stewardship while calling for a pragmatic interpretation of the regulatory framework. The statement recognises that while harmonising veterinary antimicrobial product information across the EU is essential, this process will take considerable time and cannot cover every clinical situation.
FVE therefore calls on the European Commission and national competent authorities to confirm that veterinarians retain the professional flexibility to make evidence-led prescribing decisions — guided by diagnostic testing, AMEG categorisation, and recognised treatment guidelines — during this transition period.
