Want to check if an animal is fit for transport? Check our fitness guides!

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), together with key stakeholders representing animal welfare, transport and livestock sectors—Eurogroup for Animals, UECBV (European Livestock and Meat Trading Union), Animals’ Angels, ELT (European Livestock Transporters) and IRU (International Road Transport Union)—prepared the Practical Guidelines to Assess Fitness for Transport for pigs, adult cattle and horses. These practical guidelines were developed to support consistent, science-based decision-making and to ensure that only animals fit for transport are moved, thereby preventing avoidable suffering. Using easy languages and pictures they show which animals are fit, unfit or require further assessment before transporting. Thanks to the support of the European Commission, they are translated in all EU languages.

Want more information on good and better practices to transport animals? Check out the Animal Transport Guides!

The Animal Transport Guides is a project funded by the European Commission and developed between 2015 and 2018 to improve the welfare of the main livestock species—cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep and horses—during transport within Europe and to third countries for slaughter, fattening and breeding.

The project’s deliverables include five species-specific guides (one per species, available in English here and on request in other languages) describing good and better practices for animal transport, 17 technical fact sheets focusing on practical information (available in eight EU languages), and five educational videos (one per species, also available in eight EU languages). These resources are intended to support veterinarians, transporters, farmers and competent authorities in promoting high animal welfare standards throughout the transport process.
