On 8 April, FVE and EMA are joining forces for Veterinary Medicines Safety Day to highlight the critical importance of using antiparasitics responsibly.
Parasites can become increasingly difficult to treat if medicines are used too frequently, at incorrect doses, or without following clinical instructions. Animal caretakers are encouraged to always read the package leaflet and consult their veterinarian if they notice treatments aren’t working, such as ongoing itching or a lack of improvement. Proper disposal of unused products is equally vital to protect the environment and prevent the misuse of medicines, ensuring these essential tools remain effective for the future.
For the veterinary profession, your oversight is the cornerstone of protecting both animal and public health. Before prescribing, it is essential to confirm parasite presence through testing and to treat only when necessary, balancing the benefits with the risks to humans and the environment. Accurate dosing and educating caretakers on correct administration are key steps in preventing resistance.
If you suspect a product is not performing as expected or observe an adverse event, reporting it immediately makes a difference in detecting resistance early and keeping medicines effective for all.
