Based on scientific evidence, stakeholder feedback, assessment of economic & social impacts, and taking into account societal demand, this initiative is a step in the revision of the EU animal welfare legislation, including to follow-up on the commitment to phase-out the use of cages for certain animals. Let us know if you have data or insights on
- Phasing out of cages (appropriate transition periods and technical requirements for cage-free systems for laying hens, pigs, calves, pullets, broiler breeders, layer breeders, rabbits, ducks, geese, and quail)
- Welfare Indicators and digitalisation (measures and digital tools for effective, transparent monitoring for poultry, pigs, cattle and meat rabbits)
- Import requirements (equivalent animal welfare import standards for poultry, pigs, calves and rabbits)
- Killing of male day-old chicks in the laying hens’ sector (Phasing out this practice and set out appropriate transition periods and possible derogations)
The Call for Evidence will run for four weeks and will be complemented by other general and targeted consultations, to consider the impacts of all the different options. Please share any national data or insights with us by 12 July (wiebke@fve.org) and reach out for any further information!
