The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) has launched a new tool designed to support compliance with the EU’s Veterinary Medicines Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2019/6). The new visual guide offers an intuitive, flowchart-based approach to navigating the prescription ‘Cascade,’ outlined in Articles 112–114 of the regulation.
The Cascade provides a crucial framework for veterinarians, allowing them to make informed decisions when no authorised veterinary medicine is available for a particular species or indication. The visual guide leads users through the decision-making process step-by-step, enhancing clarity and guiding veterinarians whether treating companion animals, food-producing terrestrial and aquatic animals, or equids.
Beyond guiding treatment choices, the visual guide emphasizes responsibilities, record-keeping, and proper product use, with specific focus on:
- Substances essential for equine treatment
- Antimicrobials reserved for specific human infections
- Antimicrobials with restricted use in the Cascade
- List of antimicrobials which shall only be used under restrictions in Cascade
This resource reinforces veterinarians’ ability to uphold animal health and welfare, ensuring safe and effective care while maintaining regulatory compliance.
